Wimbledon is a professional tennis tournament hosted in London. It forms part of the tennis Grand Slam with the other Major events being the Australian Open, French Open and the US Open. Â It is the only Major tennis tournament still to be played on grass.
The tennis tournament features five main events the Gentlemen’s Singles and Doubles, the Ladies’ Singles and Doubles and the Mixed Doubles; there are also similar junior events and invitation events. The matches in the Gentlemen’s Singles are best-of-five sets, whereas all other matches are best-of-three.

It all takes place over two weeks in June and July, the 19 courts in Wimbledon will have 128 players play in singles events and 64 pairs in each gendered double.
It is one of the most prestigious venues in the tennis championships featuring its own Royal Box, for members of the Royal Family, and an audience indulging on strawberries and cream.
Wimbledon was founded in 1869, making it the oldest tennis tournament in the world, it was originally titled The All England Lawn Tennis Club. The only event held up until 1884 was the Gentlemen’s Singles, the Ladies’ Singles was introduced that same year. At the beginning of 1905 Wimbledon garner attention internationally and professional players from the States entered the competition. From 1922 onwards, the previous year’s champions were required to play all rounds rather than being granted byes which followed all other tennis tournament rules.
Since 1997, Wimbeldon has been developing to make it one of the best venues for tennis. A new retractable roof was installed for the 2009 championships to stop rain from flooding into the open court.
Although the tournament is hosted in England, no British man has won the singles event since 1936 when Fred Perry rose to victory and no British woman has won the Ladies Singles since Virginia Wade in 1977.
Australian tennis pro Todd Woodbridge has the prestigious title of winning the greatest amount of championships with nine Gentleman’s Doubles wins.  The current 2011 Wimbledon champion is Novak Djokovic, winning his first Wimbledon against Rafael Nadal. Petra Kvitová is the Ladies’ champion making it her first Grand Slam victory.
