Many players who have won other Grand Slams have never won the French Open; the clay surface makes it very difficult for players heavily reliant on big serves. Whereas, French Open winners have usually been players who are more comfortable on slower surfaces. Players such as Rafael Nadal, who is comfortable on a clay court, has won six French Opens and is currently singles champion.
The French Open began in 1891 and was originally a French only tournament. In 1925 the competition opened to foreigners and was open to all amateurs internationally. In 1968, the French Championships became the first Grand Slam tournament to go open.
Australian Roy Emerson holds the record for the most titles won in the French Open he has currently won two single and eight doubles tournaments.
