The tournament was first held in 1905, originally played on grass (permanently changing to a hard court in 1987), the tournament was first known as the Australasian Championships, then became the Australian Championships in 1927, and finally the Australian Open in 1969. Even though it earned its Open title in the 60s, it was not until the 80s that the majority of foreign players started to play mainly because of the sheer distance of Australia compared to the rest of the World.
The current men’s champion of the Australian Open is Novak Djokovic, who was presented the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, he defeated Andy Murray in the final for the second consecutive year. The current women’s champion is Kim Clijsters making it her first Australian Open title and her third Grand Slam. Â Twins, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan, have won their fifth men’s doubles tournament together, giving them the prestigious title of winning the most consecutive men’s Australian Open doubles since 1969.
