The National Rugby League (NRL) is a top Australian rugby league competition, it is one of Australia’s most watched sports and consist of 16 teams playing in the premiership, battling it out to play in the NRL Grand Finals.
In 1998 the NRL was created in response to the Super League War, an event that saw the Australian Rugby League and Rupert Murdock’s News Corporation running parallel rugby competitions which resulted in both games being financially stretched with poor sponsorship deals. As a result, both parties partnered to form the NRL games.
The joint venture meant that teams had to be cut to make the competition more competitive. All teams were assessed to see who was top tier and as a result many teams merged together. In 1999Â the South Sydney Rabbitohs were controversially axed leading to a string of legal battles and public marches, they were eventually reinstated back into the NRL games in 2002.

In 2006 there was another milestone as two interstate teams were in the NRL Grand Finals and the Brisbane Broncos rose to victory beating Melbourne Storm by 15-8. Â The Brisbane Broncos are a formidable opponent, they’ve won nearly 64 per cent of their matches.
The Centenary of Rugby League was celebrated in 2008, where the Team of the Century was announced with players past and present in the line-up. It was a great year for rugby as during the NRL Grand Final the Melbourne Storm lost in a scoreless match, Â the first time that had happened in 30 years.
The NRL has many great rugby players, Andrew Gary Johns is considered one of the best. He’s won three Dally M medals and been the world’s best halfback for a number of years. He finished his career with the highest points in premiership history with 2,176 points, can anyone beat him?
