The US Masters Tournament is one of four major championships in professional golf. It is an invitation only event making it a small major championship. The winner will receive a green jacket which must be returned year-by-year to the next champion.
The US Masters is played in April with the final always falling on the second Sunday in April. The Masters players will play in groups of three for the initial 36 holes, with the players who are not within 10 strokes of the leader’s score being cut. The next and final set of 36 holes is played, if there is a tie at the end the players will enter sudden death and continually play the 18th and 10th hole until there is a winner.

The champion is then invited to the other majors: the US Open, the British Open, and the PGA Championship and earns a lifetime invitation to the Masters.
The US Masters started in 1934 and was founded by amateur golfer Bobby Jones, he was a popular golfer and attracted some major golfing stars to the inaugural game.
The most successful Masters player is Jack Nicklaus who has won six US Masters. Tiger Woods was also a strong American contender with four wins under his belt. One of the 2012 Masters favourites is Phil Mickelson who has already won three Masters and is ranked the 2nd best of world golfers.
