The event is a 72 hole stroke play tournament with a cut after the first 36 holes limited to the top 70 players and ties.  The British Open is unique in that it features a four hole playoff for all golfers tied at the end of regulation, with the playoff continuing into sudden death holes if players remain tied after four holes.

The Open Championship was first played in 1860, originally hosted just in Scotland. In 1892 the event was held outside of Scotland and was doubled in length from 36 to 72 holes.

Throughout British Open history there have been prominent players, throughout the 40s and 50s Australian Peter Thomson was best remembered for his five Open wins. Three of his wins were consecutive, making him the only man to do so in the 20th century.

During the 60s and 70s, Jack Nicklaus set the standard for the US dominance of the Open, he set records for having the most rounds under par and most aggregates under par. In recent years, Tiger Woods has secured Americas success in the Open winning three Championships  in 2000, 2005, and 2006.

The current British Open champion is Darren Clarke who won the championship in 2011. However, youngster Rory McIlroy is set to storm the 2012 Open with his recent victory at the US Open and his record for the best opening round shooting a 9-under-par 63.
