A final was introduced in the 1982/83 cricket competition, whereas before the team with the most points was declared the winner. Now the top team with the  most points hosts the match and the team with the second amount of points will play a five day final. The away team must win the match to win the championship, in the event of a tied game the home team will win.
The Sheffield Shield had its named controversially changed in 1999. It was changed to the Pura Cup due to sponsorship from the Pura company, however, it proved unpopular with fans and as of 2008 the name was changed back.
The current record holder for most runs is Darren Lehmann with  a score of 12971.  The most successful are by far the New South Wales Blues, they’ve played the Sheffield Shield since its inception and have so far won 45 finals.
