The Australian Football League (AFL) is the major professional competition of Australian rules football (Aussie rules). The premiership consists of 24 games leading up to the AFL Grand Final running from March to early October. There are 22 players in total, with 4 on the bench, and there are four quarters played throughout.
The AFL games began as the Victorian Football League in 1897 but the name has since changed to nationalise the sport to include other states. The history of Australian Football League has an extensive and complicated background. Aussie rules were started by Tom Willis in 1857 created as a way to keep cricketers fit during the winter season. Rules were created and updated and soon the Victorian Football League began.

The premiership competition has been affected by war, bribes, name changes, team mergers and rule updates making it the game it is today. Most of the teams that play today can be dated back to the very beginning of the AFL’s origins. The Melbourne University Football Club are the only club to have left the AFL, leaving in 1914 because of the First World War.
